The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
