Can You Solve It? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Forged our Contemporary Globe

One can find many contenders for the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.

As per a new book, though, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before automated sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced in less than seven days.”

Owing to their speedy automated cutter, which converted timber into boards using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to build ships more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial and artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.

The Original Genuine Industrial Device

The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed its circular movement to up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per stroke.

“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine operated within a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every downward stroke while moving with each return motion. It was a remarkably clever application of basic components.”

A fact that brings us to the current puzzle. The task is for you to reimagine one of the fundamental ideas underpinning Corneliszoon’s machine.

Circular to Vertical

Construct a mechanism that turns circular motion to up-and-down action. You have these components only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or housing into which a single the rods can slide snugly. (Consider that it is possible to mount components on a base, so that the parts do not collapse.)

The solution returns later today UK featuring the solution.

In the interim, NO SPOILERS. Rather, please suggest (non obvious) candidates as the planet’s most impactful invention.
