Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in defense or intelligence positions.
"As we did, you all made an vow to defend and defend this founding document," the representatives declared in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a heated reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a unified announcement denouncing the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our United States with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these radical digital publications and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Representatives' Strong Response
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and made an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the former president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the government instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and decide all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can cause confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
