Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any determination is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
Newsom has emerged as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would increase the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut taxpayer dollars from California and threatened revoking the authority to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy stated, following a this week's tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized trucker that led to three deaths and injured individuals.
Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had earlier announced he was blocking $40m from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a recent statement countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recent poll revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.
Some time ago, the governor commented while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
