Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
