Multiple Affected as Turbulence Strikes A Delta Airlines Plane into Sydney
Several people were hurt following a Delta flight traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced rough air Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, a company official told. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.
Local paramedics said they assessed five individuals, and transferred three of them to hospital with minor injuries that comprised back pain and migraines. Those affected were between their 30s up to the 70s.
It is the latest incident of aircraft experiencing severe turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.
On board were 245 people and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the Delta spokesperson said, stating that the plane landed "safely" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday morning.
The NSW Ambulance Service said they got a call just three minutes before the plane arrived, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

Last year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when a separate Delta aircraft, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "significant" rough air just two hours into the lengthy trip, and diverted for an emergency landing.
In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a harrowing brief five-second bout of severe turbulence. One passenger died and many were hurt, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and fell back down.
In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are still very rare.
Estimates show that there are around five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a sum of over 35 million journeys that currently occur worldwide.
Intense turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a jet experiencing rough air masses exert in excess of 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a restraint.
As a changing climate modifies atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become more turbulent: temperature changes and shifting wind patterns in the higher altitudes are expected to increase the occurrence and strength of severe turbulence.
