Physical Health or World Standing - Boulter's Australian Open Dilemma

Tennis player Katie Boulter
Katie Boulter has fallen from 23rd to 100th spot in the world rankings in the current season

British Katie Boulter says she feels she has to "decide between my physical health and my professional position" as the competition carries on for a place in next January's Australian Open main event.

While the standard WTA Tour competitive period is finished, there are still ranking points to be gained in Chile, Argentina, various venues and European destinations.

The women's participant roster for the opening Grand Slam of the upcoming season will be based on the global standings of early December, which could create a challenging situation for competitors close to the qualification line.

Injury Concerns

Ex- British top-ranked player Boulter experienced an groin injury in her final event of the year in international locations last month, and is now weighing up whether to play in the WTA 125 secondary tournament in French locations, the European nation, in the opening days of December.

Boulter's recent injury, and the situation she would need to win at least multiple victories in the French tournament to improve her ranking, means she may well end up not participating.

Different Systems

In comparison, male athletes are not facing the same dilemma, as for the initial instance the men's Australian Open participant roster will be established from this week's positions, which is the ATP's formal season-concluding ranking date.

The modification is aimed at discouraging athletes from pursuing position points during what is basically the rest interval.

Professional Adjustments

This period has been a difficult one for Boulter.

She won only 14 Tour-level primary competition contests and lately separated with instructor Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year partnership in which she won several WTA championships.

"Biljana is an outstanding trainer, and an extremely excellent person as well, which makes things extremely hard," Boulter commented.

The search for a different coach is well under way, seeking an individual who has elite expertise as Boulter continues to think she can be a world-class competitor.

Career Objectives

"Moving ahead with a new coach, an important factor I'm very clear on is that they are going to be someone who has a lot of knowledge in how to make it to the highest echelon of this sport," she stated.

"I've been ranked as elevated as twenty-three and I am confident I can return to that position. I don't think my performance has diminished, I believe the steadiness must enhance.

"My aim is not merely to be positioned 50, forty, 30, twenty - we've accomplished that. The aim is to be within the elite group."
