The A$150 Million Players Evolving into a Highlight Machine
This year's NBA season starts now, signaling the initial occasion in a ten years that Australia's pair of most prominent basketball stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence signals a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for playoff aspirants, with new huge contracts making them some of Australia’s top athletic earners.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for playing time across the NBA, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following protracted negotiations with the Chicago Bulls, the guard ultimately inked his new deal worth US$100 million ($153m) over four years last month. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is affordable for his role and profile as a lead playmaker. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the young star enters this year with a point to make.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last season, he watched as his old team charged to the title in his absence. As the Chicago aim to make the playoffs in the weaker Eastern Conference, he will need to demonstrate his scoring and defence are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth
The guard signed the identical contract as Giddey this week, and after his most-improved player award last year, the Atlanta guard’s career has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now praised as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, and topped the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – over one whole takeaway per game higher than the tally of second place.
Playing next to flamboyant Trae Young in Atlanta, the 22-year-old can be successful this season as a playmaking option and elite defender as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can improve his three-point shooting, which was subpar last year, and keep enhance his passing and driving, he could become one of the league’s most well-rounded talents.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana wing the rookie has emerged as a fan favourite in Indiana following a succession of highlight-reel slam dunks in pre-season. His acrobatics prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a while”, and an opportunity to the mid-season slam dunk competition could be a possibility.
Following logging just 8 mpg per game over 50 games in his rookie campaign, the former Maribyrnong College player is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might lean towards youth following setback to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Playmaker the Sydney native dropped in the NBA Draft all the way to the 49th pick, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers selected him. The Cavaliers are front-runners to make the Finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a rookie taken in the late picks to see significant court time. But the Australian has earned time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Looms for Veteran Quintet
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting centre spot in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will be out for the opening of the season after ankle surgery.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent minutes if the team find themselves competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is likely to be used as a defensive spark off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder procedure has left him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a contract for next season, but will not want to allow his colleagues at the developing Charlotte too much head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed important pre-season chances in the Mavericks.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, game action this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in the Timberwolves, but appears to be little more than a mentor keeping Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be developed by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to earn minutes with his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a training clip posted on his social media over the weekend, demonstrating the veteran remains in form and determined on landing one more NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an break in his homeland, going fishing and using with a football. Even though he took to social media last month to deny rumors he was done, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
