Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the past of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
