The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of Machine Learning for New Divinity Game
The studio behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its new project, generating a wave of anticipation within the player base. However, recent comments from the studio's figurehead have added nuance to the conversation, addressing the developer's stance toward AI tools.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest message, the studio's founder explained that the developer is employing machine learning for specific supporting tasks. These involve developing PowerPoint slides, producing initial concept art, and creating temporary dialogue.
Notably, Vincke stressed that the end content in the game will be authored entirely by real writers. "Larian is developing every line in-house," he stated.
We are continuously growing our team of writers and are actively assembling dedicated writer rooms.
As visual development is being specifically referenced — we presently have over twenty visual developers and have roles to fill for further creatives.
Everything we do is incremental and focused on having people spend greater focus on making content.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a developer's process, not a substitute for their skill.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of AI usage initially generated unease among some the community. In reaction, Vincke issued additional detail on public forums.
"We use these tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use Google and reference books," he explained. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with original concept art."
He continued, "Our studio recruits talent for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had earlier outlined the team's targeted strategy to AI and ML, defining its use into key functions:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create basic versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts prior to complete production.
- Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how machine learning could eventually create new forms of reactivity, especially in simulating player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly affirmed that core creative domains — such as music composition — are are absolutely not fields where the company is cutting artistic talent. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.
"Our studio is not launching a game with machine-made assets, nor planning on cutting staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
