The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit earned him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff is one of just a handful of musicians, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
