New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the importance of focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, the community will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his previous Astoria apartment.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
