The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
