Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received significant criticism for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is tied to each visit, theoretically an eager reseller could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, this approach might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers seek to resell sealed items for a profit, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.
