In the past, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer began through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

His advancement has been remarkable. Starting with his first major job, he developed a reputation with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and innovate. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We must implement an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to operate similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

His desire to get better is all-consuming. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
