Two Cuba-Destined Aid Sailboats Reported Unaccounted For following Setting Sail from Mexico.

A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost boats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Missions Launched

Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine total crew members, as stated by a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Relief to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation endures repeated national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Larger International Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic pressure have increased in recent months, with remarks from different officials underscoring the delicate situation regarding relations.

Responding to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to locate the vessels and ensure the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
